Our Story

Hi, I'm Luissa, the heart behind Southern Pages.
Southern Pages was born from a simple belief: books have the power to change lives.
For me, reading wasn't just a hobby—it became a bridge.
As a first-generation Mexican American and an ESL student, English wasn't my first language. Growing up, I spent extra time in ESL classes because language didn't come naturally to me. I still remember one spelling assignment where I wrote "fast break" instead of "breakfast." It was a small mistake, but one that meant more time learning English while many of my classmates moved on.
Even then, books became my safe place.
In middle school, I completely devoured the Nancy Drew series. Those stories sparked my imagination and gave me confidence in ways I didn't fully understand at the time.
As life became busier, reading faded into the background—until adulthood, when I picked up And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. That novel reignited something in me. It reminded me that books aren't just stories; they're opportunities to learn, to grow, and to see the world through someone else's eyes.
A short time later, I was having a conversation with my employer when he asked if I thought my work was monotonous. I quietly admitted that I didn't know what the word meant. English isn't my first language, and despite living in the United States for most of my life, I still occasionally encounter words I've never heard before.
He laughed at me.
For a moment, I felt embarrassed and small. But instead of allowing that experience to discourage me, I let it motivate me.
I started reading—constantly.
I read to discover new words. I read to understand different perspectives. I read because I never wanted to feel that powerless again.
Book after book, my vocabulary expanded, and reading transformed from something I simply enjoyed into something that empowered me.
That journey is the heart of Southern Pages.
Our mission isn't simply to sell books—it's to create opportunities for people to discover the same confidence, comfort, and joy that reading gave me. We believe books should feel welcoming, not intimidating. Whether you're picking up your very first novel after years away from reading or you're a lifelong book lover, there's a place for you here.
Southern Pages is more than a bookstore.
It's proof that one book, one chapter, or even one difficult moment can change the direction of your life.
Welcome to our story. We're so glad you're here.
